I haven't blogged in a really, really long time.

kingwork

All true work combines [the] two elements of ruling and serving. Ruling is what we do; serving is the way we do it. There's true sovereignty in all good work. There's no way to exercise it rightly other than by serving.

Having a good job doesn't mean that we'll do it well. Having the right role doesn't guarantee righteousness. Saul, for example, had good work to do, yet he--as Israel's first king--failed at his job. We can't look to our jobs, our positions, for righteousness. Both Saul and David were defined by the anointing of the Spirit of God. They had equally good work to do. ... Saul failed at the same work that David succeeded in carrying out. Jobs are important. Things need to be done. But no job is perfectly suited for carrying out God's purposes. The key to living vocationally--that is, being "God-called"...--isn't getting the right job or career but doing kingwork in whatever circumstances we find ourselves.

missing God

Up to the age of thirty or beyond it, poetry of many kinds... gave me great pleasure, and even as a schoolboy I took intense delight in Shakespeare.... Formerly pictures gave me considerable, and music very great, delight.

But now for many years I cannot endure to read a line of poetry; I have tried to read Shakespeare, and found it so intolerably dull that it nauseated me. I have also almost lost any taste for pictures or music.... I retain some taste for fine scenery, but it does not cause me the exquisite delight which it formerly did.... My mind seems to have become a kind of machine for grinding general laws out of large collections of facts....

The loss of these tastes is a loss of happiness, and may possibly be injurious to the intellect, and more probably to the moral character, by enfeebling the emotional part of our nature.
